Providence Health Plan Is Ending — Here's What You Need to Know

If you're covered by Providence Health Plan, you've probably seen the news: Providence announced on May 20, 2026 that it will be exiting most of its insurance lines of business at the end of this year. That's a big deal for a lot of people in Oregon and Washington — and I want to make sure you have clear, accurate information about what's actually happening and what it means for you.

First, the reassurance: nothing changes right now.

If you are currently covered by PHP, your coverage continues through December 31, 2026. You can still see your doctors, fill your prescriptions, and use your benefits exactly as you do today. Providence has committed to honoring all existing contracts and regulatory obligations through the end of the year.

What happens after 2026 depends on your plan type.

If you have an Individual, Family, or Small Group/Employer plan: Your coverage will end at the close of 2026. You'll need to find a new plan for 2027. The good news is that Providence hospitals and clinics aren't going anywhere — they're actively working to join additional insurance networks, so you may be able to keep your Providence providers under a new plan.

If you have Medicare Advantage through Providence: This is the most uncertain situation right now. Providence is in active negotiations with a national carrier to potentially continue operating its Medicare Advantage plans into 2027, which could allow current members to keep their coverage. No deal has been announced yet, and the details are still unresolved. This is a space to watch closely — and one where having an advisor in your corner matters.

If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or D-SNP plan through Providence: Providence has indicated these programs will be transferred to other organizations. Partners have not been named publicly yet. More information is expected later this year.

If you have Medicaid/OHP coverage through Providence: Similar situation — Providence is evaluating options for transferring management to another organization.

The bottom line: you have time, but not unlimited time.

The 2027 Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare (October 15 – December 7, 2026) will be especially important this year. For ACA plans, Open Enrollment runs November 1 – January 15. These windows are your opportunity to evaluate options and make a confident choice — not a rushed one.

If you're on a Providence plan and have questions about what this means for your specific situation, I'm happy to talk it through.
